It
is a tedious and commendable effort to prepare
the history of a traditional class. But it is
a necessity for the present generation to trace
the roots of their family. The family members
realised this necessity and being a Retd. Research
Officer, Mr. K.T. Joseph, was entrusted this
huge task of preparing the histoty of Koodarappilly
family.

The
three century old history of the Koodarappilly family
can be traced back to the 16th century. It is believed
that during the ‘Malabar Revolt’ they migrated to Central
Kerala and settled in Cochin area. Some of the brave
and bold members among them moved to Vyttila area and
settled in ‘tents’ (Koodarams) During that period Vyttila
was notorious for robbery and murder. Vyttila was the
midway route while traveling between Tripunithura and
Cochin for the family members and troops of the Cochin
Kingdom. It is said that the criminals of Vyttila used
to rob and harass even the members of the royal family
and their soldier. Our bold and courageous forefathers
subdued these criminals and brought them under their
control.

The King of Cochin came to know of these heroic
deeds of the new brave tent settlers (Koodarapullikal)
and asked them to meet him. They were rewarded
with land to settle in that region permanently.
The King also ordered the rich landlords of
Vyttila to provide the required facilities for
these people and their families.

The good
and brave deeds of our great grand parents brought us
the family name “KOODARAPILLY”- which evolved from the
Malayalam word ‘Koodarappillikal’ (People in tents).
Thus they settled with their families in the land gifted
to them by the King of Cochin and the rich people of
Vyttila. Later on they acquired more land. Some took
up agriculture for their living and some took up contract
works and financial chitties. Their hard work brought
them good rewards and they lived a rich life. Their
helping nature, religious mentality and kindness made
them acceptable to the society around them.

In
those days they had to travel to Venduruthy Church for
prayers and other services. A church nearby became a
necessity. It has been recorded in the land record office
that in the year 1841 (1017 – Malayalam year) our great
grand father, Koodarapilly Thummi Thomman donated a
portion of his land for the construction of a church
in Thykoodam. Later on land was also donated for the
erection of small chapels under the Thykoodam Parish
Church.

Around
50 years back, most of the land for the Vytitla –Janatha
road was given by our ancestors. They were brave and bold
enough to acquire the required land needed from others and to
make the road a reality.
Our ancestors were religious and had a deep knowledge of religion. Many of them devoted their life for religion and became priests and nuns. With pride we can say that our present generation has been able to keep up this religious attitude and are serving on various religious institutes as priests and nuns.

As per the existing records Koodarappily family members have been living in Vyttila area since 1708. We are the seventh generation of the great family. The family has branched into nearly 200 houses and is living in Kerala and other parts of the world.
